New Orleans Kicks Off Mardi Gras With Skull and Bone Gang Tradition

New Orleans’s Treme neighborhood kicked off Mardi Gras on February 21 with the 200-year-old tradition of being woken up by the North Side Skull and Bone Gang.

Footage from NOLA Ready shows the group dressed in skeletal costumes and playing drums as a pre-dawn crowd watches.

“Everywhere else, it’s just a Tuesday,” the caption read.
