Ookla crowns Time as Malaysia’s best fibre broadband provider
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 ― Ookla has released its Q2 2023 Internet Performance report for Malaysia which reveals the best fibre broadband provider for speed, latency and consistency. The analysis is based on speed test data taken by users on a monthly basis.
According to Ookla, Malaysia currently ranks 39 for fixed broadband on the global index, which is two places down from last month. On average, Malaysians get 95.69Mbps download and 51.73Mbps upload, with a ping of 7ms. As illustrated in the graph above, Malaysia’s fixed broadband is showing a gradual improvement on a monthly basis.
Going down to the specific telcos, Ookla crowns Time as the fastest fixed broadband provider in Malaysia with a median download speed of 108.38Mbps and it has the lowest multi-server latency of 9ms. As a comparison, Maxis takes second place with a median download speed of 92.61Mbps, followed by TM at 91.77Mbps.
In terms of latency, Maxis also holds second place at 13ms while TM recorded 15ms. Time is also described as the most consistent fibre broadband provider in Malaysia at 88.2 per cent, followed by Maxis at 86.3 per cent and TM at 85.2 per cent.
Malaysia has expanded its fibre broadband footprint under Jendela as it has increased the number of premises passed by fibre from 4.96 million in September 2020 to 7.74 million as of the end of 2022. In Q1 2023 alone, the three public listed telcos ― CelcomDigi, Maxis and TM, have collectively added 91,000 fibre broadband connections.
Besides increasing fibre access, the government aims to reduce the cost of broadband following the implementation of the new Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP). While the new MSAP takes effect on March 1, 2023, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recently revealed that the price reduction for broadband will only happen after September 2023 when providers such as TM, finalise and publish their Reference Access Offer (RAO). ― SoyaCincau
