From Popular Mechanics

There’s plenty of summertime left for exploring, and if a backpacking trip is on your agenda, you’ll want to pack a trustworthy water filter. Sawyer makes some of the lightest and most affordable options on the market, which are popular picks for first-timers on the trail as well as pros. And for a limited time, you can save up to 32 percent on the Sawyer Squeeze and Sawyer Mini, as well as a few other Sawyer products on Amazon.

We’ve been testing and using the Squeeze this summer, and it’s impressed us enough to earn a spot on our list of the best backpacking water filters. The hollow fiber membrane filter removes bacteria, protozoa, and particulate matter larger than 0.1 micron and can treat up to 100,000 gallons. The lifespans of most competitors, which range from 250 to 525 gallons, pale in comparison.

The Squeeze is also easy to use and clean and very versatile. Sawyer prints all the instructions you need onto the two included 32-ounce mylar pouches, but the process is straightforward. Fill a pouch with dirty water, screw on the filter, and squeeze the bag so water flows into your clean vessel or directly into your mouth. Except when we were treating water from a shallow creek, we consistently had one liter of treated water in less than two minutes.

On sale for $25, the kit also comes with a cleaning plunger, straw, inline adapter, extra O-ring seal (used on the input side of the filter), and a mesh bag to keep everything together. Combined, it weighs just north of 6 ounces, which is less than half as much as many other models we’ve tested. And those additional accessories mean you can use the Squeeze as a straw, gravity system, or in-line filter with a hydration reservoir.

If you’re really concerned about weight, pick the 2-ounce Sawyer Mini, instead. It uses the same technology and functions just like the Squeeze, but a modified design makes the filter ready to use with a reservoir without an adapter. The smaller size means it won’t treat water as quickly as the Squeeze, but it’s a fair tradeoff for the weight savings. The Mini, just $17 right now, comes with a 16-ounce mylar pouch, drinking straw, and cleaning plunger.

The sale also includes a few other Sawyer products. Save 15 percent or more Sawyer bug repellent and sunscreen while supplies last. You can also still shop more outdoor gear that’s discounted during Amazon’s big Summer Sale.
