One dead in Cameron Highlands landslide, four still trapped under rubble

All the victims, including a woman, were said to be living in a house that was buried in the landslide, and are reportedly Myanmar nationals.

At least one person has died after a landslide at Cameron Highlands in Pahang on Friday (26 Jan). Four other victims are feared buried alive under the rubble, authorities say.

The Pahang Fire and Rescue Department said it received a distress call at 2.51am. They then dispatched nine firemen to the location, according to local news agency Bernama.

The five victims of the landslide are reported to be Myanmar nationals, ranging from 25 to 56 years old, according to the Cameron Highlands District Disaster Management Committee.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department Director, Haji Wan Mohammad Zaidi Wan Isa, said in a statement that the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team (STORM), together with a K9 unit, have been deployed for the search and rescue operation.

He also added that they are assisted by the special forces from Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

“All the victims, including a woman, are believed to be living in a house that was buried in the landslide,” he said in the statement.
