The Olympic Village Is Serving 2,000 Chocolate Muffins Per Day Since the Treats Went Viral (Exclusive)
Sodexo Live!, the company responsible for feeding the Olympic athletes in Paris, tells PEOPLE all about the viral muffins
The most popular baked good in the Olympic Village in Paris isn't a croissant, pain au chocolat or any other classic French pastry — it’s a double chocolate muffin that’s gone viral on TikTok.
To figure out what makes the treats so irresistible, PEOPLE reached out to Sodexo Live!. The company is responsible for feeding the 15,000 athletes living in the Village.
A representative for the company tells PEOPLE that the goodies — made popular by Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen — are 130g “Maxi” muffins “presented in a tulip cup."
“It is filled and topped with dark chocolate, featuring chunks of dark chocolate and milk chocolate. This muffin is served daily at the main athletes' restaurant and at the six takeaway food areas within the Village,” the rep continued.
And the buzz isn’t just happening online — the chocolate muffins are actually flying off of the shelves in the Village, according to Sodexo Live!.

“This dessert is very popular, as around 2,000 chocolate muffins [are] consumed each day at the Athletes' Village. In total, Sodexo Live! plans to serve 100,000 muffins throughout the Athletes’ Village during [the] Olympic and Paralympic Games,” says the company, which wouldn't reveal the recipe.
Thanks to Christiansen, self-proclaimed “Olympic Village Muffin Man” and a three-time Olympic swimmer, the treats have been the subject of dozens of videos on social media, some of which have received over two million likes. “I literally cannot stop,” Christiansen said in the comments of one of his videos.
Other Olympians, including gymnast Aleah Finnegan, have shared their own clips reacting to the viral treats. The morning after winning their bronze medal, several members of the U.S. men's gymnastics team gave their thoughts.
“I had my first one this morning…oh my gosh, they’re really good,” said Brody Malone, who was interviewed by PEOPLE alongside teammates Stephen Nedoroscik and Asher Hong. “They’re so gooey.”
Sodexo Live! also tells PEOPLE about the wide variety of desserts available to the athletes, including “fromage blanc, compotes, fresh fruit, as well as a variety of popular pastries such as flan parisien, tarte au citron, financiers, carrot cakes and macadamia cookies.”
In fact, there’s been a new dessert rivaling the muffins in the last few days. Jon Joentvedt, a 21-year-old swimmer on Team Norway, has shared a series of TikToks championing a new dessert item available in the Village: cookies.
Christiansen’s teammate uploaded a video of himself trying the cookie, which appears to feature both milk chocolate and white chocolate chips, on July 30. Joentvedt captioned the clip, “Waaaay better.”
The Norwegian athletes have engaged in a hilarious feud trying to catch each other being “traitors” and eating their rival’s favorite desserts.
On July 30, Joentvedt filmed Christiansen eating a cookie and wrote over the clip “I guess the Olympic Muffin Man is a traitor after all.”
On August 1, Christiansen clapped back by posting a TikTok of Joentvedt eating a chocolate muffin in the dining hall. "My mortal enemy the Cookie Man caught lacking with a muffin," he wrote over the video. “If he decides to expose me, then I will expose him as well,” Christiansen continued in the caption.
