Years & Years star Olly Alexander jokes after getting complaints for being 'too sexy'

Olly Alexander has vowed to be even sexier next time following reports that 179 viewers thought his New Year’s Eve show on the BBC was too sexualised.

The Years & Years singer served up a special gig to ring in 2022, with the Pet Shop Boys and Kylie Minogue also on the bill.

Metro reported that the performance sparked a flurry of complaints and that there were claims from some that it was “overly sexualised”.

However, Alexander clearly saw the funny side.

Tweeting a link to the story, he joked: “179 people complained i was too sexy !!! gonna aim for 200 next time.”

Fans flocked to Twitter to express their support after Alexander posted his message.

One wrote: “How’s having body confidence ‘over-sexual’? And yesss they must be very intimidated of your sexiness to complain over youuu."

"Thank goodness you are," said another. "New Year’s Eve in the living room would have been so boring without you."

"I mean who actually has time to complain about people being sexy?" asked another.

"You were great and it was a great way to see into the New Year xxx," said another.

One fan posted: "I absolutely love that 179 people who complained, watched you long enough to decide that you were ‘too sexy!’ We watched with my 80 year old mum and she thought you were ‘very talented and have a smashing voice!’"

The BBC confirmed that it had “received complaints from viewers unhappy with some of the content in the broadcast as live concert”.

The corporation responded on the complaints section of its website, saying in a statement: “The event and the staging of this late night show is intended to be a celebration for all and we hope that for the majority of viewers watching, the tone of the overall concert remained within general audience expectations.”
