These Old-School Retro CD Rugs Pay Homage to The Beatles, OutKast, N.E.R.D., and More

If you're looking for a rug that can really add some rhythm to your home, we might just have your fix. That is of course, if you're a fan of musical groups and artists like Outkast, Coldplay, The Beatles, and Kanye West.

Toronto-based designer Sean Brown recently introduced his impressive collection of old-school-style CD rugs to the world. He shared his creations on Twitter back in April, racking up over 90,000 likes (and counting!) on his tweet, as well as catching the attention of outlets such as Vogue. The collection honors a slew of popular albums from decades past, with an emphasis on hip hop.

Each hand-tufted acrylic rug is round like a disc and designed to mimic the art seen on the original CD. For example, if you ever owned Lil Kim's 1996 album "Hard Core," you may remember that the CD came in a bright pink hue. Brown designed the rug to look just like that. He even cut out the center of each rug to represent the spindle hole.

When it came to his inspiration for the rugs, he told Vogue, "I think it was just happenstance, I don't think it would have gone the same way if it was something I had deliberately set my sights on." He explained that while self-isolating this year, he was really able to get in touch with his creative side as well as his space (which included his CD collection).

While he admires all the artists he paid homage to with these rugs, it wasn’t all about the music—the aesthetic of each CD was also important. “The whole reason I chose that specific album for the Jay-Z rug is not actually because it's my favorite Jay-Z album to listen to from top to bottom,” he said. “But in terms of design, it works best because of the gray.”
