Oakland Zoo Welcomes New Giraffe After 30-Hour Journey From Kansas

Oakland Zoo in California welcomed a new female giraffe to its herd on April 29.

According to the zoo, one-year-old Kijiji was brought to the facility from the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas.

The move was prompted by a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. They deemed Kijiji’s genetics an excellent match for Oakland Zoo’s male resident giraffe, Mabusu.

Staff said Kijiji’s 30-hour trip from Kansas was done in a modified tall trailer and included frequent stops to check on her.
