NUS to set up pop-up visitor centre, guided walks in response to influx of foreign tourists on its campus

Move is in contrast to that of NTU, which has implemented registration fees, visitation slots and guidelines for incoming tourists

SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore (NUS) will be setting up a pop-up visitor centre from July this year, in order to provide its visitors with a "meaningful and engaging experience". It will also introduce guided walks led by trained NUS student guides, according to The Straits Times.

The move is in contrast with that of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which requires all travel agencies who want to conduct tours at its campus to register their tours, book visitation slots and adhere to visiting guidelines. Tour groups will also have to pay an entry fee of $719.40 per vehicle entering the campus, and all tours must be completed within an hour.

Both universities are dealing with an influx of foreign tourists visiting their campuses, leading to complaints from students from both universities, such as large crowds taking up seats meant for them, long wait times for toilets, as well as packed campus shuttles and eateries including canteens.

Open campus, so no fees for NUS visitors

NUS said in a media statement on Friday (9 February) that it will not be charging visitors any fees, as it is an open campus.

“It is a privilege to be able to welcome visitors – locally and from abroad – who share in our mission and are interested to learn more about the university," it said. "At the same time, ensuring a conducive environment for the best learning experience of our students, preserving campus vibrancy for an immersive student life, and keeping our facilities such as laboratories and classrooms safe and secure are important priorities.”

The new visitor programme aims to be up and running for the summer vacation season from late July this year. NUS said that until then, it will consult stakeholders, student leaders and travel agencies to work out operational details such as tour registration and visitor route.
