Looking for a peaceful retreat less than an hour away from New York City? Enter the Modern ZenHouse in Stamford, Connecticut.
This gorgeous mid-century modern home, which is currently available to rent on Airbnb, lies on the land where famed sculptor Gutzon Borglum's outdoor art studio once thrived. While that name may not ring a bell, you likely know at least one of Borglum's works: He was the creative genius behind Mount Rushmore! He even built some of the landmark's parts at this very spot in Connecticut before transporting them to South Dakota.
Since Borglum's time, his open-air sanctuary has undergone some slight changes. For starters, the drawbridge, which used to be the only means of entering, has been removed. And two buildings now sit on the land: the Modern ZenHouse as well as the main home where the host lives. We sent our Airbnb explorer-in-chief Kirby Porterfield to check out the Modern ZenHouse rental.
With plenty of floor-to-ceiling windows, this home feels connected to nature and cut-off from the city sounds and everyday nuisances. Plus, host Olga is dedicated to making guests feel at peace during their stay.
The one-bedroom, two-bathroom home features an open floor plan and is decorated with antiques from around the world. There is even some artwork designed by Olga herself (as well as pieces created by guests) adorning the bedroom walls. If you're in the creative spirit, you're in luck: Olga invites guests to put pen to paper during their stay by providing an easel, paint, and a blank canvas to use.
The grounds are perfect for harnessing that creative energy, just like Borglum did. Nestled on 3.5 acres of lush greenery and woods, the property boasts an in-ground pool (open seasonally) and scenic walking trails. Upon arrival, Olga will even take guests on a meditation walk to help cleanse their auras and welcome them to their home for the next few days.
