Novak's "Spider-Man" role revealed
4 Feb – On 28 March 2013, "The Amazing Spiderman 2" director Marc Webb tweeted a set photo of actor B.J. Novak as a mysterious character in the anticipated film.
"Day 38. A supposed rumour about a Dunder-Mifflin takeover at Oscorp?" tweeted the director.
The clues we could have gotten from the tweet was that Webb could be a huge fan of the sitcom "The Office" with the obvious reference to the fictional paper company "The Office" is based on, and the fact that he mentioned Novak's character 'taking over' Oscorp.
A little bit less than a year later, Webb's latest tweet includes actor Novak's funny video promo for his new book, and the answer to his character name.
"Almost shot ASM2 in B+W til @bjnovak's (A. Smythe) promo for his excellent book ONE MORE THING beat me to it," tweeted Webb before linking Novak's book promo.
The 'A. Smythe' he added in brackets referred to villain Alistair Smythe, created by Louise Simonson and Mary Wilshire back in 1985 and is classically known as the creator of the 'Spider-Slayers', a team of robots designed to search for and destroy Spider-Man.
He is typically drawn using a wheelchair; having lost the use of his legs, but also has a history of physically changing himself using technology, both through robotics and biology.
Novak's Smythe hasn't appeared in any of the new trailers for the film, but we can guess that the robot suits seen in the recent trailers would have been made by his character.
Besides starring in "The Office", which had already ended after a long and satisfying run, B.J. Novak appeared in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds", "The Internship" and "Saving Mr. Banks".
