Northern Lights Put on 'Gorgeous Display' Above Iowa

The night of October 11-12 was an ideal night for skywatchers to take in the aurora borealis, with the NOAA issuing a geomagnetic storm watch, and forecasting a coronal mass ejection (CME) from a solar flare to hit the atmosphere.

A photographer in Iowa captured this timelapse footage of the northern lights above Oran. “Shortly after Earth was smacked by the CME last night, the skies really ramped up sparking a gorgeous display,” wrote @SSA_Mark on Twitter. Credit: Momentz by Mark Photography via Storyful
