North Carolina Lawmakers Vote to Overturn Governor's Veto of 12-Week Abortion Ban
Both chambers of North Carolina’s general assembly voted on Tuesday, May 16, to overturn a gubernatorial veto of a bill that limits abortion to 12 weeks in most cases.
The bill was passed by the Republican-majority legislature on Tuesday last week, and vetoed by Democratic Governor Roy Cooper on Saturday.
Following the vote to overturn the veto, Cooper accused state Republicans of attempting to rush through the legislation because “North Carolinians don’t want right-wing politicians in the exam room with women and their doctors”.
“North Carolinians now understand that Republicans are unified in their assault on women’s reproductive freedom and we are energized to fight back on this and other critical issues facing our state,” Cooper said. “I will continue doing everything I can to protect abortion access in North Carolina because women’s lives depend on it.” Credit: Zack Hawkins via Storyful
