Sir Sean Connery, the beloved Scottish actor best known for playing James Bond, has died aged 90.

Connery, who will be remembered first as British agent 007, the character created by novelist Ian Fleming, died peacefully in his sleep overnight while in the Bahamas, according to his son Jason.

Tributes poured in from fellow actors including Robert Carlyle, the Scottish star of Trainspotting and The Full Monty, and Sam Neill, who appeared alongside Connery in 1990 submarine thriller The Hunt for Red October.

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, also paid tribute, saying she was "heartbroken" by the news the star's death.

‘A fantastic Bond and an even better detective’

@Fastand Louche

'His death scene in The Untouchables has never been bettered'

@Neil MacCallum

"A great Scot, a great Bond, and a great actor.  Anyone who doubts his acting ability should watch The Offence and his Oscar-winning role in The Untouchables.

"His death scene in The Untouchables has never been bettered. It had enormous emotional force, not just because of his ability, but maybe because surely Sean Connery can't die – even in a movie. RIP."

'His films were a fixture of my youth'

@John Blackley

"I thank my luck that Sir Sean was making films during my lifetime. His life story's a true rags-to-riches tale and deserves its own biopic.

"His films were a fixture of my youth and I looked up to him as a person for making such a success of an unpromising beginning.

"He lived an enviable life and I'm grateful for all the many hours of entertainment he gave me."

'Very proud of him as a fellow Scot'

@Ian McPherson

"Not bad for a wee boy from a not very advantageous start in Edinburgh to do and get where he did. Very proud of him as a fellow Scot."

'He seemed invincible, just like Bond'

@Julie Arnison

"Oh dear, how sad. He seemed invincible, just like Bond. He was, eternally, the best Bond ever. He had so many other great films, "The Hunt for Red October" and particularly "The Russia House " being just two. What a great character he clearly was too in real life."
