No Injuries Reported as Oakland Homeless Encampment Engulfed in Flames

A fire engulfed a homeless encampment in Oakland, California, on Thursday, April 28, displacing at least one person, according to reports.

Video taken by Michael Chesher shows flames and smoke billowing from underneath an overpass beside Lake Merritt Channel, near the Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland.

Chesher said he had seen three similar fires in the last 30 days.

According to reports, the fire was contained within 45 minutes. Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Tracey Chin said several explosions were due to propane tanks catching fire. The bridge was closed to traffic for 90 minutes, according to the East Bay Times.

The department told local media no one was injured in the fire and an investigation had begun into its cause. Credit: Michael Chesher via Storyful
