I was born in Germany, but spent most of my life in Minnesota. It's funny, though, because whenever I tell people my family moved from Europe to the United States, specifically Minnesota, they always say the same thing: “Why Minnesota?” and “you must be cold—all the time.” I usually respond with something along the lines of, “Minnesota is actually pretty great,” and, yes, “winters can get cold, but it’s made every other state’s winter extremely mild.”
Growing up in Minneapolis has made me an expert of cold-weather essentials, especially outerwear and shoes. Seeing as the cold is coming in quick (and harsh), I’m already starting to prepare my wishlist of winter staples, as I prepare to spend most of December back home in Minnesota. First up? The $189 Ibira boot features a weatherproof nubuck leather (of course, sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries), which means you can wear them in rain, snow, and sleet without ruining the exterior (or needing to spray them in leather protest prior to wearing). Love!
There’s also a vegan shearling lining that, if anything like Cariuma’s other shearling-lined shoes, feels like stepping on clouds, a durable, slip-resistant sole perfect for trudging through sleet, and a vulcanized construction that ensures long-term durability and wear. Most of my Cariuma sneakers have lasted me years, so I think this one will, too.
Based on my many experiences wearing winter boots in below freezing temperatures, I can confidently say this Cariuma find is a clear winner, so, it’s coming on my winter wishlist (wink, wink to anyone reading, my birthday is on December 4.)
