Nicole Richie’s 40th birthday party proved to be more than a little hair-raising after she accidentally set her hair on fire.
The former Simple Life star has shared the moment she got a little too close to her birthday candles, catching her curly hair on the flames.
As she leaned into cake, which was branded with a photo of her as a child, her hair immediately went up.
Thankfully her loved ones were quick to jump in and put out the fires, and mum-of-two Richie found herself unhurt and even finding the comic side in the situation.
Alongside the video which she shared on Instagram, she wrote: “Well… so far 40 is [fire]”
Joel Madden, Good Charlotte lead singer and Richie’s husband of 11 years, also jumped in by quoting her pal Paris Hilton, declaring: “That’s hot”.
Hilton later shared her shock and said: “OMFG Happy Birthday Bill! Hope your ok! Love youuuuu”.

There was one person who wasn’t as amused by the incident though - Richie’s hair stylist, Gregory Russell, who revealed this wasn’t even the first time she’d suffered a trial by fire when it came to new looks.
“STOP!!! AGAIN?!?!” he wrote.
“I’ll start a Pinterest board for new haircuts,” Richie replied. “Start thinking of cute curly bobs.”

She celebrated with pals in Los Angeles, popping champagne and eating burritos together in the park.
Her father, Lionel Richie, also shared a tribute to her, and said: "It’s showtime !! You have been rainbows and butterflies your whole life … but you will always be my little girl, no matter how many birthdays we celebrate."
His classic song 'Isn't She Lovely' was inspired by the day he adopted her.
Younger sister Sofia also shared a picture of them together, writing: "So lucky to call you my big sis. I love you beyond words."
