Nicolas Cage, Colman Domingo and June Squibb Among Newport Beach Film Festival Honorees
Oscar winner Nicolas Cage and Oscar nominees June Squibb, Colman Domingo and Marianne Jean-Baptiste are among the honorees at this year’s Newport Beach Film Festival Honors on Oct. 20 at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach. The honorees will be feted at a special brunch also celebrating Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch.
Cage, currently appearing in the horror hit “Longlegs,” will receive the Icon Award for his long career. Joan Chen, recently seen in “Didi,” will receive the Career Achievement Award. Two Oscar nominees will also receive honors: Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) is being presented the Maverick Award and June Squibb (“Thelma”) the Lifetime Achievement Award. Emmy and Grammy winner Diane Warren (“Six Triple Eight”) will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Music Award. Oscar nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”) and Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) are receiving the Artist of Distinction Award. In addition, actor George MacKay (“The End”) is being presented the Spotlight Award.
There will be additional honors presented throughout the duration of the festival, which runs from Oct. 17-24. On Oct. 21, two-time Oscar winner Finneas O’Connell will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Music Award at a special career conversation. Also on Oct. 21, “America’s Got Talent” host Terry Crews will receive the Arts Champion Award at the Festival’s Sunset Series.
Previously announced honorees being celebrated during the festival include Christoph Waltz (Icon Award on Oct. 17), David Alan Grier and Wendi McLendon-Covey (Outstanding Achievement in Comedy Award on Oct. 18), Colleen Atwood (Career Achievement in Costume Design on Oct. 20), Jane Lynch (Outstanding Achievement in Comedy Award on Oct. 22) and Peter Sarsgaard (Performance of the Year Award on Oct. 23).
Also previously announced are Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch, who will be celebrated at the honors brunch on Oct. 20: Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”), Zoë Chao (“Nightbitch”), Ryan Destiny (“The Fire Inside”), Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”), Fred Hechinger (“Gladiator II”), Ella Hunt (“Saturday Night”), David Jonsson (“Alien: Romulus”), Josh Rivera (“American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez”), Drew Starkey (“Queer”) and Toby Wallace (“Eden”).
This marks the 25th anniversary of the Newport Beach Film Festival, one of the largest luxury lifestyle film fests in the U.S. Upcoming films such as “Old Guy,” “A Real Pain,” “Blitz,” “Hard Truths,” “Nightbitch” and “The Piano Lesson” will be premiering at the festival this year.
