It's sad news for Nicola Adams, who has had to withdraw from this year's Strictly Come Dancing series after her dance partner, Katya Jones, tested positive for coronavirus. The BBC reports the former Olympic boxer has said she is "devastated" not to be able to continue on in the competition.

"I'm absolutely devastated my Strictly journey has come to an end so soon," said Nicola. "I had so much more to give and so many people to win this for! But I just want to say a huge thank you to Katya for being the best dance partner anyone could ask for.

"I'm gutted to be out of the competition but in these unprecedented times and as frustrating as it is, the COVID measures in place are to keep everyone safe, and I'm doing what I can to help."

Nicola and Katya are the first ever same-sex couple to feature on the show. After a positive start to the competition, they found themselves in the dance off last weekend when their jive failed to impress enough. The judges chose to save the couple, however, and Jason Bell was sent home. It's not clear whether he will remain out of the competition or whether there may be a chance for him to reinstate himself following this development.

Despite the fact that England was sent into a second lockdown shortly after Strictly begun, the dancing series has continued to go ahead with a strict protocol in place. Over the summer, all the pro dancers and some crew members isolated at home before moving into a hotel near the Strictly studio and were able to safely live and work together as one household. This meant they could pre-record all their group dances, so it's just the couple dances we're watching live every weekend.

The show's coronavirus measures also means social distancing rules in place, with the dancers and celebrity contestants forming support bubbles.

In the wake of Katya Jones' positive coronavirus test, it's reported that a number of crew members are now also self-isolating after coming into contact with her.

The show's executive producer Sarah James said in a statement: "We are incredibly sad that these unfortunate circumstances mean that Nicola and Katya are unable to continue on Strictly. They are a brilliant partnership and had already achieved so much during their time on the show."

Sad news, but now more than ever it's vital to prioritise health.
