Nick Lachey Recalls Thinking 'Do I Have to Really Announce This' Before 'Cringeworthy' “Perfect Match” Challenges (Exclusive)

"The kissing challenge is probably not the favorite challenge of the contestants, but I have to assume probably one of the more entertaining challenges for our viewing audience," Lachey tells PEOPLE

Nick Lachey on 'Perfect Match' season 2

Nick Lachey knows there were some uncomfortable moments during Perfect Match season 2.

As the popular Netflix dating show nears its season 2 finale on Friday, June 21, Lachey looks back at this season and admits the compatibility challenges were definitely awkward to watch as host of the series.

The challenges, which took place throughout the season, saw the couples participating in physical activities meant to determine their compatibility levels. Some of them were more about emotional connections, like how well they knew each other, while others were a bit more physical and required the show's participants to kiss, dry-hump and take body shots off of each other.

"It is cringeworthy at times, there's no doubt about it," Lachey, 50, tells PEOPLE exclusively. "Which is why it makes for good TV."

Perhaps the biggest "cringeworthy" moment came in episode 2 when the couples all had to participate in a kissing challenge. The cast was blindfolded and wore noise-cancelling headphones as they all kissed each other one by one and then rated the kiss afterward. Only one cast member, Xanthi Perdikomatis, opted to not participate in the challenge.

"That compatibility, that chemistry, it's there for some, and it's certainly not there for others, and we all get to see that unfold," Lachey explains. "So yeah, I can certainly say the kissing challenge is probably not the favorite challenge of the contestants, but I have to assume probably one of the more entertaining challenges for our viewing audience."

"But... it is telling, and I think there's some real value in it because physical chemistry is a big part of any relationship, and that's certainly reflected in the kissing challenge," he adds. "But yeah, there are moments where it's like, 'Oh my gosh, do I have to really announce this right now?'"

Even with the awkward hosting moments, Lachey says he isn't phased.

"It's all kind of fun and part of the experience... I've done two seasons of this show, and both casts have been absolutely amazing to work with and to get to know as people, and absolutely a joy across the board. So no complaints at all on my end," he says.

Season 2 of Perfect Match has been quite the rollercoaster, with some shocking moments unfolding so far. Heading into the finale, longtime pair Jessica Vestal and Harry Jowsey were on the rocks after he admitted to acting inappropriately with costar Melinda Melrose. Fans will learn if Jess decides to give Harry another chance or end things for good in the finale.

Also paired up heading into the finale are Chris Hahn (Dated and Related) and Tolú Ekundare (The Trust), Alara Taneri (Dated and Related) and Stevan Ditter (Too Hot to Handle), Micah Lussier (Love Is Blind) and Izzy Zapata (Love Is Blind), Elys Hutchinson (Too Hot to Handle) and Bryton Constantin (Squid Game: The Challenge), and Christine Obanor (Too Hot to Handle) and Kaz Bishop (Dated and Related).

With a second season of hosting now under his belt and fans eagerly awaiting the season 2 finale, Lachey says he hopes there will be more Perfect Match — and more compatible duos for fans to watch — in the future.

"If we find genuine connections here, if somebody's able to create a lasting relationship out of this, then great. We're looking for chemistry — physical chemistry certainly, emotional chemistry," he says. "But I think the cornerstone of this show and what's really been the mainstay of this for two season now is just a lot of fun."

"And that starts with a great cast who come willing to have a good time and willing to kind of put themselves out there and invest in themselves," he continues.

"I can only hope for more of the same, that people come ready to go for it ... I think that's when the best TV happens, it's when the best results happen in relationships. It's when the best happens across the board when you're willing to put yourself out there and just go for it," he adds. "So yeah, I've been very lucky to host two seasons of this show, and hopefully many more. But it's been a lot of fun, and it all comes down to the cast, honestly. They've been great for two seasons now and hopefully continue."
