This Next Wave Designer Is Bringing Art to Your Home Through Pillows
"Art doesn't have to be on your walls—that's how I approach it," says Next Wave designer Anthony Gianacakos. That's how he approaches his own textile line, Anthony George Home, and now, it's the foundation of a new collaboration with his longtime friend, Alison Causer, which sees her paintings transformed to throw pillows.
The line includes five square throw pillows, each printed with one of Causer's abstract works. In somewhat of a full-circle moment between art and design, the pieces were actually born of experimentation with Benjamin Moore paint.
"Between 2014 and 2016, I started painting on these color swatches from Benjamin Moore and I was using them as a way to explore mark making and to push my own ideas about color," says Causer. This led to a series of 8" x 8" abstract works, which, when it came time for Causer and Gianacakos to collaborate, the longtime friends thought would make the perfect subject for pillows.
"They're a little more approachable," says Causer, than a larger-scaled work. So, they translate well to pillow format—without being exorbitantly expensive. Each pillow sells for $149, not cheap for a throw pillow, necessarily, but a great price for a work of art. "We wanted a way to get something really unique and beautiful that's not a $10,000 painting," says Gianacakos. "So someone who really loves design can spend $150 and really transform a room."
"For myself, as an artist, to have something that's accessible, is so important," says Causer. "And the great thing about these is, they're not inspired by artwork—they are actual art pieces translated to pillows."
With a sofa full of these, who needs a gallery wall anyway?
