Next Tottenham manager: Spurs ‘end’ interest in Nagelsmann leaving Liverpool icon clear favourite
Tottenham are no longer considering appointing Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager, according to reports.
This makes Liverpool icon Xabi Alonso the clear favourite to take the helm at Spurs next season, with Daniel Levy believed to be an admirer of the Spaniard.
Nagelsmann was widely reported to be close to finalising terms with Tottenham. But, it now seems Levy has opted to go in a different direction.
Tottenham have been on the lookout for a new long-term manager since the club decided to part ways with Antonio Conte in March.
The Italian’s assistant Cristian Stellini originally took over as temporary manager. But, he was fired a month later, with Ryan Mason taking charge of the team until the end of the campaign.
A number of names have been discussed by the club’s hierarchy as they look to find a long-term successor to Conte ahead of next season, with Nagelsmann being considered for a number of weeks to be the main candidate.
Indeed, it was reported only on Thursday that Levy’s top managerial choice was Nagelsmann, with everything pointing towards the German getting the job.
However, a report from ESPN claims that Spurs have decided against bringing in the German coach. Now, according to the bookies, Alonso is the big favourite to take the job.
As noted by Football365,Levy is allegedly ‘willing to pay to release Alonso from his Bayer Leverkusen contract’ in order to make him the new Tottenham manager.
However, Real Madrid also have their former player on their radar, should Carlo Ancelotti leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season.
While the Spanish giants have another former player of theirs – Raul, on the shortlist, Florentino Perez is apparently pushing for Alonso’s appointment.
This season, Alonso has helped push Bayer Leverkusen up the Bundesliga table and has got them into the Europa League semi-finals.
So, it’s no surprise to see Tottenham and Madrid pushing for his signature.
Whether or not Levy gets his man remains to be seen, but what is almost certain is that Nagelsmann will not be the Spurs manager next season.
