Former West Ham and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie has backed a serial trophy-winning manager to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham, if the Italian decides to walk away from the north London club.

Conte’s future at Spurs is under massive scrutiny after a poor run of results, allied with the fact that he is still to fully commit himself to the club as his contract runs down.

Tottenham are seemingly stalling themselves, however, as they do have an option to trigger a 12-month extension.

Latest reports suggest Conte will quit the club this summer, that’s according to trusted Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio.

He is convinced that the former Chelsea and Juventus chief will walk away from Spurs, whether he wins a trophy or not.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino continues to be spoken about as Conte’s successor. However, McAvennie believes Thomas Tuchel could be a perfect fit in north London.

The German was sacked by Chelsea back in September but has made it known that is available again. And when asked by Football Insider if Tuchel is a good for to replace Conte, McAvennie has no doubts.

He said: “I think Thomas Tuchel would be up for any job because he is unemployed at the moment.

“I thought he did well at Chelsea. He won trophies he did well and spent money then they sacked him. It does not make any sense to me.

“He is a good manager. I hate talking about people when they are still in a job and Conte is still there.

“It will be Conte’s decision but I do not think he is safe. Conte calling them out might just be the trigger for that.”

Tuchel appointment would follow worrying Spurs trend

While Thomas Tuchel remains one of Europe’s top coaches, he would once again prove a controversial gamble for Daniel Levy – especially given that he would make if three out of Tottenham’s last four permanent coaches to have also managed Chelsea. And it’s not like the other two have proved to be a huge success.

The former PSG chief was unlucky to be shown the door earlier in the season. Especially when he was allowed to bring in his own signings over the two months prior.

It was evident that Tuchel and new owner Todd Boehly did not get along. However, Chelsea have actually regressed since Graham Potter came in and are now throwing money around in the hope of a quick revival.

Tuchel has won numerous trophies during a stellar managerial career so far, but alarm bells should be ringing over his acrimonious exits at PSG and Chelsea and Levy would be better taking a much safer option.

And you could argue that you cannot get any safer than re-appointing Pochettino in north London.

Pochettino deserves chance to rebuild Tottenham

Things turned very sour very quickly for the Argentine after the crushing disappointment of the 2019 Champions League final defeat.

A number of players who had performed so well under Pochettino dropped their levels. And it was clear that the manager himself was still suffering from a hangover from that loss to Liverpool.

The end became inevitable but surely he had earned the right to build a new Spurs side.

Under Pochettino, Tottenham were mostly a forward-thinking and attractive team to watch, which is a far cry from what they have been the last three years.

Handing him back the reins now would give the club’s trophy-starved fans the lift they need, while also appeasing talisman Harry Kane as he continues to be linked with an exit this summer.

Spurs are back in action on Monday evening when they head to Fulham in the Premier League.
