NewJeans is the new fastest K-pop act to reach a billion streams on Spotify

KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — There’s a new K-pop act on the rise. Meet South Korean girl group NewJeans.

With six songs as of March 2023, the group broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest K-pop act to hit one billion streams on Spotify in 219 days.

The record was previously held by Jungkook of BTS at 409 days and Lisa of Blackpink at 411 days.

Ditto and OMG are the group’s most streamed Spotify songs at 313.2 million and 312.4 million streams respectively as of May 2023, according to the Guinness World Records website.

NewJeans made their debut with hit singles Attention and Hype Boy in July 2022, pop and R&B-inspired tracks which entered the Billboard Global 200 chart.

The group’s following releases in December 2022, Ditto and OMG, entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went viral on TikTok.

They have also won various rookie awards at Golden Disc Awards the Seoul Music Awards, the Korean Music Awards and the Asia Artist Awards.

Meanwhile, the group's members have become brand ambassadors for luxury fashion houses Gucci, Channel, Burberry and Dior.

The quintet consists of Danielle, Minji, Hanni, Hyein and Haerin.

NewJeans is expected to release a new album this summer, according to label ADOR Chief Executive Officer, Min Hee-jin.

“It was actually yesterday that they finished recording for the new album that is scheduled to be released this summer,” she said in an interview with Billboard in April 2023.

“In the albums going forward, NewJeans will continue to strive to present something new and unique to exceed the expectations of their fans.”
