Newcastle preparing almighty triple raid on Man Utd, Arsenal and Leicester that’ll shake up the Premier League
Newcastle are plotting a major summer spree that could include poaching star names from Man Utd, Arsenal and Leicester, per a report.
The Magpies have taken great strides forward this season, though their campaign is in danger of unravelling on the home straight.
The 2-0 defeat to Man Utd in the EFL Cup final denied Newcastle their first piece of major domestic silverware since 1955. Just two wins from their last nine in the league has also tempered expectations a place in next season’s Champions League awaits.
The lack of strength in depth is beginning to tell and with some form of European competition all but assured for next season, it’s a situation that must be remedied in the market.
The Saudi-backed club won’t lack for funding when the summer window opens. However, Newcastle’s decision-makers have operated with relative caution thus far in an effort to ensure they’re not taken for a ride.
However, according to a comprehensive update from the Athletic, the purse-strings could be loosened in a big way this summer. Eddie Howe is determined to “disturb” the league’s hierarchy and doing so will require major investment in the market.
The article runs the rule over Newcastle’s summer plans and moves in three positions are set to take precedence.
Firstly, an upgrade at left-back is wanted and that tallies with what TEAMtalk were exclusively told by reporter Ben Jacobs last weekend.
Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Nottingham Forest loanee Renan Lodi are options. However, the biggest fish in the pond is Kieran Tierney of Arsenal.
The 25-year-old Scotland international has fallen behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order and as such, his future in north London is under a cloud.
Caught Offside recently revealed Tierney’s asking price is likely to begin in the £35m-£40m range if Arsenal do decide to cash in.
The Athletic stress manager Eddie Howe is a ‘long-term admirer’ of Tierney who would unquestionably be the sexiest and highest profile addition of the three.
Man Utd, Leicester moves to follow?
Elsewhere, a holding midfielder whose arrival would free up Bruno Guimaraes to operate in more of a box-to-box role is wanted.
Moises Caicedo of Brighton is admired, though it’s acknowledged he may be out of Newcastle’s ideal price range. Brighton rejected bids of £70m+ for Caicedo in January and their position has since been strengthened after Caicedo penned fresh terms on March 3.
Edson Alvarez of Ajax is ‘well-liked’, while Fulham’s Joao Palhinha (also a Liverpool target), Everton’s Amadou Onana and Wolves’ Ruben Neves all get a mention. However, the most intriguing – and gettable – option is Scott McTominay.
The arrival of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen has pushed McTominay down the order at Old Trafford.
talkSPORT recently reported Man Utd are ready to cash in on McTominay this summer. Football Insider claimed a £25m bid might be enough to seal a deal, while a prior Athletic piece revealed two traits McTominay possesses that’s got Howe hot under the collar.
The Athletic acknowledge McTominay ‘could be available’ and his arrival would ‘potentially release Bruno Guimaraes further upfield’. In effect, a McTominay move would strengthen two positions.
The final deal in the works regards Leicester’s James Maddison and would involve the highest transfer fee of the three.
The Foxes playmaker is a long-term Newcastle target and their interest has not subsided. In fact, Maddison is labelled Newcastle’s top target across all positions.
The Magpies were heavily linked with Maddison last summer, though a move obviously did not come to pass. Leicester then made it crystal clear they wouldn’t entertain a January sale while the threat of relegation zooms, but the story may be different at season’s end.
Sky Sports reported Newcastle saw a £50m bid for Maddison rejected last summer. Assuming he’s valued somewhere around the £60m range, deals for he, Tierney and McTominay could set Newcastle back around £125m combined.
The Athletic claim five new faces could arrive at St. James’ Park, though the aforementioned trio look the most attainable from those named in the report.
All are Premier League proven and all are only now entering the primes of their careers. The potential triple coup would go a long way to confirming Newcastle’s place among England’s elite.
