Newcastle chief labelled ‘fake’ after ‘PR’ stunt following loss to Man Utd – ‘sentimental rubbish’
Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has been blasted for her response to their loss to Man Utd in the final of the Carabao Cup.
The Magpies were beaten 2-0 by Man Utd in the final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle huffed and puffed but they were unable to break down a resolute Man Utd side, who were the deserving winners in the end.
The Newcastle supporters still clearly had a fantastic day out at Wembley and they supported their players right up until the final whistle.
There is a good feeling around Newcastle at the moment following the club’s takeover in 2021. They lost in the Carabao Cup final but they are in the fight to qualify for the Champions League as they sit fifth in the Premier League.
After the defeat, Staveley lauded Newcastle’s supporters for taking them “on this amazing journey”.
“I was so proud of all of the fans,” Staveley told talkSPORT. “Everybody. I was crying, my son was crying, we’re all crying. But it was amazing, at 2-0 down, we had flags going. The passion from everyone, they’ve all taken us on this journey.
“We will win the Carabao Cup. We will win the FA Cup. We will win the Champions League. We will win the Premier League.
“This is all about the amazing fans who have taken us on this amazing journey. We’re just honoured and humbled. We feel very privileged to run Newcastle.”
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan was far from pleased by these comments from Staveley.
He has encouraged her to “dial don’t he fake humility” as it is “sentimental rubbish” from the Newcastle United chief.
“It’s a PR spin,” Jordan told talkSPORT. “You knew you were buying a football club that if you put it into a League Cup final you will inundate London.
“So let’s dial down the fake humility and look at the reality of what you’ve got there. I think it’s ridiculous a term and so you didn’t expect it.
“You’re the owners of a big club in England. I think it’s ridiculous to turn around and say you didn’t expect that. If I bought Newcastle and set the town on fire I would know that Newcastle getting to a cup final that London would be inundated, because they’ve got a remarkable fanbase.
“It’s entirely appropriate that Amanda Staveley is patted on the back for the appointments that have been made by her and others, and [as a fan] if you cannot be behind what they’re doing now at Newcastle, when in God’s name would you be behind it?
“But let’s get past the sentimental rubbish.”
