Newcastle are ramping up a potentially record-breaking move for a dynamic attacker who’s ready to ditch his current club and chase two specific dreams, per a report.

The Magpies’ current record buy is the £63m (including add-ons) fee they paid to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad last summer.

The Sweden international has struggled with injury thus far, though when fit, has shown signs he’s of the calibre required to take Newcastle where they want to go.

The Saudi-backed club are aiming to establish themselves as a firm fixture in the upper echelons of the Premier League. In other words, they want to turn the ‘big six’ into a ‘big seven’.

Eddie Howe is doing a stellar job of making that dream a reality thus far. Newcastle currently sit fifth in the table, though retain very real hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League through finishing fourth.

To accelerate their progress, more big money signings for proven players who can make an instant impact will be required.

According to the i newspaper, one such player who fits that bill is James Maddison and a move is taking shape behind the scenes.

James Maddison to Newcastle?

The i report Newcastle will resurrect their interest in Maddison this summer after chasing the Leicester City playmaker for over a year.

Sky Sports previously reported Newcastle saw a £50m bid for Maddison rejected last summer. Their interest was maintained into the winter window, though it became apparent Leicester would not sell under any circumstance while threatened by relegation.

However, the i add that while Maddison remains focused on steering the Foxes to safety, he’ll decide enough is enough and push for a move at season’s end.

The 25-year-old is deemed unlikely to sign a contract extension at the King Power, a move which will force Leicester into entertaining offers. Indeed, their delicate financial positions means they cannot afford to lose such a highly saleable asset for nothing.

Newcastle are primed to roll the dice once more and a move could come close to – or even exceed – the £63m paid for Isak.

Aiding Newcastle’s cause to a slight degree is the fact Maddison will have just 12 months remaining on his deal in the summer.

Leicester’s bargaining position will be somewhat weakened, though a proven and dynamic attacker like Maddison will not move cheaply. If a bidding war ensues – potentially with Liverpool and/or Tottenham –  the £63m figure will likely be surpassed.
