Never-Trump Pundit Laughs At Idea Of Musk And Ramaswamy's 'Department of Government Efficiency'
Commentator George Conway doesn’t seem worried about the damage social media platform owner Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy could do as the leaders of the proposed “Department of Government Efficiency.”
In an appearance on MSNBC’s “Alex Wagner Tonight” to talk about Donald Trump’s slate of potential political appointees on Tuesday, the longtime Trump critic was dismissive about Trump’s hypothetical cost-cutting agency.
He chuckled as he told anchor Alex Wagner that “DOGE,” a meme reference, is “just a nonexistent department” at this point.
“Can they bring it into existence by the sheer force of their own will?” Wagner wondered. “What do you think is the plan here?”
“First of all, it’s not going to be a governmental department, as I understand it, and there are actually rules and statutes that apply,” Conway explained.
Despite being dubbed a “department,” the group would likely only be able to advise the president on how to shrink the federal budget and size of the government. That’s because Congress, not the president or executive agencies, directly controls how government funding is spent. Congress would also need to sign off on the creation of a brand-new agency.
Trump praised Musk and Ramaswamy while announcing his plans for the two moguls in a statement late on Tuesday.
“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” the Republican boasted.
