Netflix has this week announced a release date for the star-studded film, The Trial of the Chicago 7, which re-tells the true story of the trials of seven people following peaceful protests that turned violent at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Earlier this month Netflix dropped $56m to acquire the rights to the film (which has already been tipped as an awards contender) after Paramount's plans for a theatrical release were derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. We don't yet know if that means the film will only be released on Netflix, or if it will also get a theatrical release when cinemas re-open.

Here's everything we know about the film so far...

What is The Trial of The Chicago 7 about?

The ensemble film is based on the trials of The Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam war protestors who were charged with conspiracy and inciting riot and other charges relating to anti-establishment protests that took place at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Five of the seven were eventually convicted for inciting riots while all were acquitted of conspiracy. One of the reasons the story became so famous was due to the dramatic trial, in which Judge Julius Hoffman sentenced all the defendants to long sentences (ranging from two and a half months to four years) for contempt of court during the trial. In later proceedings, the contempt charges were reversed and the convictions for inciting riots were also overturned.

Who has been cast in The Trial of the Chicago 7?

The cast is pretty major. Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Abbie Hoffman, alongside Inception's Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Richard Schultz, Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Bobby Seale and The Theory of Everything's Eddie Redmayne as Tom Hayden.

The cast also includes Dunkirk's Mark Rylance, Atlanta's Tiffany Denise Hobbs and Orange is the New Black's Alice Kremelberg. Plus, the film was directed by Hollywood heavyweight Aaron Sorkin, the man behind The West Wing and The Social Network.
