Netflix's Rebecca director Ben Wheatley signs up to direct Jason Statham's The Meg 2

From Digital Spy

The Meg 2 has taken an unexpected step forward as it names its director.

The original film, which starred Jason Statham and Ruby Rose, debuted in 2018 and was a major success at the box office.

With The Meg raking in $530.3 million globally, a sequel was quickly announced off the back of its success and pre-production on the project has recently picked up speed as The Meg 2 has confirmed its director.

It's certainly an interesting choice.

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Wheatley has signed on to direct The Meg 2.

The original movie was directed by National Treasure creator Jon Turteltaub, who sits out this time.

As well as directing films including Kill List, Free Fire and High-Rise, which starred Tom Hiddleston, Wheatley is also the director behind Netflix's adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, which dropped to the streaming service earlier this month and stars Lily James, Armie Hammer and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The Meg follows the story of a shark expert who comes up against a giant prehistoric shark called a megalodon.

Its sequel is expected to see Statham and a lot of key cast members return, with Statham also attached to the project in a creative role.

A release date for The Meg 2 has yet to be announced.

The Meg is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now.
