Netflix is teaming up with Luke Cage creator Cheo Hodari Coker and Jay-Z for a film adaptation of Dwayne Alexander Smith's novel Forty Acres.

Published in 2014, the book follows a civil rights attorney who must fight for his life when he's welcomed into an elite Black organisation and uncovers a shocking conspiracy.

The upcoming film adaptation, which will be written by Coker, is being described as a cross between the Tom Cruise movie The Firm and Jordan Peele's Get Out, according to Deadline.

With the project still in early development, casting announcements are yet to be made, but we know that Coker, Jay-Z, James Lassiter and Aaron Kaplan will all serve as producers.

In addition to creating and executive producing Marvel's Luke Cage for Netflix, Coker also penned the award-winning drama series Southland for TNT.

His previous film writing credits include Creed II and Notorious, and he's currently working on the script for Diary of a Trap God, which is based on the Gucci Mane autobiography.

Coker's Luke Cage series was axed along with all of Netflix's Marvel shows back in 2018. Commenting on its cancellation at the time, the streaming service said in a statement: "Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series."
