Netflix is releasing a sequel to the sci-fi dystopian hit, The Platform. The Spanish-language film had premiered at TIFF in 2019, after which Netflix secured a streaming deal for it.

In the first movie, prisoners wake up in a tower-style vertical prison consisting of around 250 floors with just one cell per floor. Once a day, a platform filled with food descends from the top floor downwards, momentarily stopping at each floor – those at the top can feast, while prisoners on the lower floors are left to starve. Prisoners are randomly relocated to a new level each month and if they attempt to hold on to food from the platform, their cells are lowered to freezing temperatures.

Director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia will return for The Platform 2 with Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena and Óscar Jaenada starring. The sequel takes place in the same style of prison, known in the movie as the "Vertical Self-Management Center.” A teaser offers little in the way of specific plot details but previews a montage of eerie scenes and some conflict between prisoners.

“As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?,” Netflix’s synopsis reads.

The Platform 2 will premiere on Netflix on October 4. Watch the teaser above and stay tuned for an official trailer.
