Neighbours newcomer Don Hany has discussed taking over the role of Pierce Greyson, revealing that he spoke with Tim Robards as the recasting happened.

UK viewers will see the switch of actors take place during next week's episodes, as the affair storyline continues.

Robards' planned departure from the soap happened four weeks earlier than expected, as he flew back to Sydney to be with his wife ahead of the birth of their first child – resulting in Hany stepping in to finish Pierce's storyline.

"He gave me all the backstory on Pierce that he had put together in his head," Hany said.

"He told me about how Pierce had got to where we had before Tim had to go. Really, the major things had to do with the marriage and how and why that was falling apart, but underlying all of that was the fact that Pierce loved Chloe.

"Tim is probably one of the nicest guys I've met, and I envy him and pity him being someone who is about to walk into being a new parent today.

"It's frightening enough but to have to add to that the complexities of what's happening and going on for him couldn't have been harder."

Hany added that he loved taking over as Pierce, describing his time on set as "awesome".

"Tim had done all the hard work for me!" he added. "I felt like I was walking into his life for a month. All the relationships were there, and the whole journey was mapped out.

"It was a delight to turn up and jump from one scene to another with all these great people. I honestly can't say I would prefer any other job!"

The actor continued: "I spent most of my time working with Sharon [Johal] and April [Rose Pengilly], and they are such dedicated and professional women. They made me feel so welcome and never once said, 'Tim wouldn't have done that'."
