Dr Anastasy Vasilyeva, an ally of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, played Beethoven as police investigators entered her Moscow apartment for a search on January 27, local media reported, playing on even as an officer read her a statement.
Vasilyeva, who is head of the trade union Doctors Alliance and previously treated Navalny, according to reports, is seen calmly playing piano as police read out a statement.
Vasilyeva was later arrested and is being detained for 48 hours, her lawyer said in a Facebook post.
The arrest came as part of a clampdown by Russian authorities on allies of Navalny, after thousands of Russians participated in January 23 protests in support of the high-profile Putin critic after he was jailed.
TASS reported that Navalny’s brother Oleg, Anti-Corruption Foundation employee Lyubov Sobol, and Pussy Riot group member Maria Alyokhina were also apprehended in connection with the protests.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the protests are considered to be in violation of COVID-19 restrictions. Organizers could face up to two years in prison, the ministry said. Credit: Alexandra Zakharova via Storyful
