Staff at Smithsonian’s National Zoo welcomed the birth of a giant panda cub on Friday, August 21.
Mei Xiang, a 22-year-old panda, gave birth to the cub at 6:35 pm Friday evening. The zoo said Mei Xiang picked the cub up immediately and began cradling and caring for it. The cub’s sex will be determined at a later date.
