National Press Club of Malaysia launches Professional Development Series courses for media practitioners
The National Press Club of Malaysia (NPC) last night launched its interactive training course designed to upskill media practitioners in the country.
Launched by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, the NPC Professional Development Series is part of the club’s broader initiative of empowering those within the media fraternity.
NPC president Datuk Ahirudin Attan said journalists needed to continuously train themselves in new fields and prepare for new frontiers.
“The Professional Development Series is part of the NPC’s initiative to help our journalists, young and old, to navigate the challenges they will face in the cyber sphere,” said Ahirudin.
“Apart from digital journalism ethics, the Professional Development Series will shed light on issues like data security, scams, and legal potholes, and help participants understand the role of authorities like the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in safeguarding our profession, as well as our readers.”
On the current state of journalism in Malaysia, Ahirudin said media practitioners have a role to play in nation-building and pushing for institutional reforms. He urged those in the industry to champion the causes that will benefit the people.
The NPC is Malaysia's oldest press organisation, established in 1948.
Speaking to more than 150 guests at the Tun Abdul Razak Institute for Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR), Teo said journalists play an integral role in defining the national identity, adding that there was a need to shape and create a future for journalists in the profession.
“Media all over the world have been the target of malicious manipulation campaigns ... this goes beyond cybertroopers and keyboard warriors,” said Teo.
“Empowering journalists with the tools to enable them to make the distinction between misinformation and facts, may seem simple, but the complexity of the technology and the threats, has never been more challenging.”
Also present at the event was MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.
The NPC Professional Development Series will be held in 10 states, including Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Sabah, and Sarawak.
Strategic partners are MCMC, IPPTAR, Crisis Management Centre, and Communications and Multimedia Content Forum.
