Nat Geo Spins Off ‘Life Below Zero’ – Again

National Geographic and BBC Studios have announced “Life Below Zero: Next Generation,” another “Life Below Zero” spinoff series.

The eight-part spinoff series will premiere in 2021, following “new individuals who, in a brave move, recently left their traditional lifestyle behind to face a challenging new world off the grid in the wilds of Alaska,” according to Nat Geo.

The news was announced on Friday at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Pasadena.

“Life Below Zero,” which started the franchise, was greenlit for two more seasons, while “Life Below Zero: Port Protection,” the previously existing spinoff series, was greenlit for one more season.

The move is part of a three-series commitment between BBC Studios and National Geographic that expands the “Life Below Zero” franchise in the U.S., Canada, and Caribbean Basin.

“Life Below Zero: Port Protection” also follows “a cast of people who have left traditional society behind,” and who have chosen to live in “varying degrees of danger” in remote regions of Alaska.

According to Nat Geo, the common element between the three shows is that all of the cast members have chosen cast off the burdens of modern society and embrace the dangers of the wild.

“In Life Below Zero: Next Generation, the all-new cast members have tried contemporary life and rejected it in favor of a life of freedom in the brutal Alaskan wilderness. They speak to the growing dissatisfaction the current generation has with technologies, which is ubiquitous in modern life. The crew will capture the cast members as they rush to prepare for and survive the frozen months of winter to the spring thaw,” the network’s description reads.

The new spinoff series will be produced by BBC Studios’ Los Angeles production unit, which is the team behind the original “Life Below Zero.”
