Leeds United will reportedly ‘re-explore the route of hiring an interim manager’ if they are beaten by rivals Southampton this weekend.

The Premier League club have been without a manager since Jesse Marsch was sacked on February 6.

Up to now, Leeds have been unable to hire a replacement. Under-18s boss Michael Skubala has stepped up to manage the senior squad on an interim basis.

The club confirmed before last weekend’s fixture against Everton that Skubala will lead the team for their “upcoming fixtures”.

“Leeds United can confirm Michael Skubala will continue to lead the men’s first team for the club’s upcoming fixtures.

“Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas will carry on supporting Michael, alongside the backroom team already in place.

“Skubala, Gallardo and Armas have overseen two positive performances over the last week against Manchester United and will lead training ahead of this weekend’s Premier League game against Everton at Goodison Park.”

Optimism at Elland Road was raised somewhat after two positive showings against Man Utd, but they were beaten 1-0 by Everton on Saturday afternoon.

With Bournemouth and Southampton also winning, Leeds are now 19th in the Premier League.

They are two points adrift of safety and they face 20th-placed Southampton at Elland Road this weekend. This is arguably each side’s biggest game of the season.

A loss for either team would leave them in a perilous position and Football Insider are reporting that Leeds would ‘re-explore an interim manager hire’ if they are beaten by their rivals.

The club are ‘plotting another potential U-turn amid fears that the club will head back into the Championship if they can’t secure a proven manager in the coming weeks’.

‘One possibility’ that is being ‘discussed’ is to bring in Gerrard and former player Gary McAllister ‘until the end of the season’.

The duo are said to ‘tick many boxes’ given their success at Rangers and that they have Premier League experience from their time at Aston Villa.

It was previously reported that Gerrard would be ‘very keen’ to join Leeds United. But it remains to be seen if he would accept a contract that only runs until the summer.

Former Watford boss Javi Garcia is the new favourite to become Leeds United’s manager. He replaced Marco Silva at Vicarage Road in January 2018.

He guided them to an 11th-place finish in 2017/18 and they also reached the FA Cup final that season. Garcia kept Watford up again in 2018/19 but he was sacked in September 2019 following a poor start to the campaign.

The Spaniard has since gone on to manage Valencia and Al Sadd. He left the Qatar-based side in June 2022 after 22 games in charge.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Garcia is indeed a ‘serious candidate’ and he is ‘in talks’ with Leeds United.

They will ‘an internal decision soon’ and Romano states that there are ‘two names on the shortlist’.
