  • N.Y.C. Mayor Eric Adams and the city's committee are deciding whether to rescind Sean 'Diddy' Combs' key to the city

  • Combs received the key from Adams in September 2023

  • The potential revocation comes after the surfaced 2016 video that shows Combs physically assaulting his ex, singer Cassie

The fallout from the surfaced video of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs physically assaulting his ex, singer Cassie, continues, as it may cost him a previously awarded hometown honor.

During a Monday, May 20 interview with news outlet PIX11, New York City Mayor Eric Adams weighed in on the 2016 surveillance footage that shows Combs, now 54, grabbing, punching, shoving, and kicking Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, now 37, at the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles.

When asked if he’s thinking about rescinding the key to the city honor that he bestowed on Combs in 2023, Adams said, "I think all of us were deeply disturbed by watching that chilling video of the young lady being assaulted by him.” The mayor shared that “the committee and the team” have “never rescinded a key before, but we are now sitting down to see what the next steps forward are going to be."

As far as next steps, Adams added, “We are taking everything under analysis, and the team will come back to me with final determination."

In September 2023, Adams presented Combs with a key to New York City for “his contributions to music, business, and philanthropy,” per Revolt. The occasion occurred the same day that Combs dropped The Love Album - Off the Grid, his most recent studio album in 17 years.

“The bad boy of entertainment is getting the key to the city from the bad boy of politics!” Adams said during the Times Square ceremony, per the Associated Press. Combs then thanked the mayor before shouting, “Diddy finally has the key to the city!”

In a short speech, the producer added, “To Mayor Adams and the city of New York: I promise to keep giving to this city that made me, Thank you for recognizing my journey and my mission to uplift and empower. Let’s continue to make history together.”

Before the brutal video of Combs attacking Ventura surfaced, the latter hit him with a 35-page civil lawsuit in November, alleging that he raped and sex trafficked her over a 10-year “cycle of abuse” and “violence.”

“After years in silence and darkness, I am finally ready to tell my story, and to speak up on behalf of myself and for the benefit of other women who face violence and abuse in their relationships,” Ventura said in a statement at the time. “With the expiration of New York’s Adult Survivors Act fast approaching, it became clear that this was an opportunity to speak up about the trauma I have experienced and that I will be recovering from for the rest of my life.”

Ventura’s lawsuit against Combs was settled one day after she filed it. At the time, the two announced that they resolved the claims made to their "mutual satisfaction."

Since then, Combs has faced several other sexual assault lawsuits and allegations of violence, the last coming from The Love Album producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, who alleged that the entertainer sexually harassed, drugged, and threatened him while working on the 2023 project.

Diddy has denied all sexual abuse accusations laid out in the lawsuits, but on Sunday apologized for the violent video released Friday.

"It's so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life," Combs said in the footage. "Sometimes you gotta do that. I was f---ed up. I mean I hit rock bottom but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable."

He continued, "I take full responsibility for my actions in that video."

In March, federal agents executed raids on Combs’ properties in Los Angeles and Miami “as part of an ongoing investigation,” Homeland Security Investigations confirmed to PEOPLE. The investigation has not yet resulted in any criminal charges.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, they are “unable” to charge Combs for the 2016 hotel attack on Ventura, as the surveillance video was filmed “beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted."

"As of today, law enforcement has not presented a case related to the attack depicted in the video against Mr. Combs," the office shared in a statement on social media. "But we encourage anyone who has been a victim or witness to a crime to report it to law enforcement or reach out to our office for support from our Bureau of Victims Services."
