Musk sells $5bln in Tesla shares after Twitter poll

Just days after he asked Twitter users if he should sell Tesla shares, Elon Musk has offloaded about 5 billion dollars worth of stock.

More than 3.5 million people responded to Musk's Twitter poll over the weekend, with 58% of them saying he should sell 10% of his stake.

According to filings on Wednesday, Musk sold 4.5 million shares which equate to about 3% of his total holdings in the electric car company.

Musk has more than 20 million further stock options that are due to expire in August of next year.

The last time Musk sold shares in Tesla was in 2016.

The stock has since skyrocketed and is up more than 51% this year.

The recent rally is in part thanks to an October agreement to sell 100,000 vehicles to rental car company Hertz.

Tesla is the world's most valuable car company with a market value exceeding $1 trillion.
