There's a lot to be excited about re: the latest Lion King installment 'Mufasa: The Lion King.' Not only does it mark Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins' foray into animation, but it also boasts a Lin-Manuel Miranda-penned soundtrack and Blue Ivy Carter's film (voice) acting debut. (Major Beyhive milestone.) The story follows the early years of the original Lion King's monarch Mufasa, and it's the official prequel to the 2019 live-action version of The Lion King. This release also stars Seth Rogan, Thandie Newton, Mads Mikkelsen, Aaron Pierre, Tiffany Boone, and more. All that being said...where can a curious viewer catch this stacked film? Here's what we know.

What is Mufasa About?

Fans of the OG Lion King (1994) should already be familiar with Mufasa’s character—Simba’s father/the king of Pride Rock. This installment meets him as an orphaned young lion, who forges a friendship with another cub named Taka. (Taka is the character that later goes by ‘Scar,’ for reasons I’m sure we’ll learn in this prequel…) Taka (voiced by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) just so happens to be the heir to the Pride Lands, and when his family brings Mufasa (played by Aaron Pierre) into their fold, the two are raised like brothers.

Anyone who didn’t grow up under a rock should know the fate of these two. Spoiler alert for those 30 years behind, but the way Scar brutally thrust Mufasa off a cliff into a stampede has indeed traumatized young Lion King viewers for generations. So how did they go from besties to brothers to beefing? That’s exactly what Mufasa sets out to explore.

How Can I Watch Mufasa?

Mufasa will be in theaters nationwide on Friday, December 20. The flashy premiere event was held December 9 in Los Angeles and saw stars like Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, Chloe Bailey, and Heidi Klum on the red carpet. For the time being, you can only catch this flick in theaters, but since it is a Disney movie, it’ll be available to stream on Disney+. The streamer's drop date is yet to be announced, but if we were to wager a guess based on Disney’s timeline in the past, it should be on there about 90 days after its release date, so late March/early April 2025.
