MTV, Nickelodeon and Other Networks Go Dark for George Floyd

In an effort to raise more awareness for Black Lives Matter after the death of George Floyd, several networks went off the air on Monday night.

MTV, Nickelodeon, and several other networks owned by ViacomCBS went off the air at 5 PM on June 1 for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the same amount of time that a police officer had their knee on George Floyd's neck.

For the Nickelodeon version, the following message was shared during the beginning of the broadcast:

"Nickelodeon is going off the air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in support of justice, equality, and human rights.

Nickelodeon Declaration of Kids' Rights

You have the right to be seen, heard and respected as a citizen of the world.

You have the right to a world that is peaceful.

You have the right to be treated with equality, regardless of the color of your skin.

You have the right to be protected from harm, injustice, and hatred.

You have the right to an education that prepares you to run the world.

You have the right to your opinions and feelings, even if others don't agree with them."

Other networks like MTV, BET, Logo, VH1, CMT, CBS, and more aired a different ad. Their version was black and white featuring the sound of someone breathing with the words, "I can't breathe," appearing in and out.

The video encouraged viewers to partner up with Color of Change, to help stop police brutality in America.

This is not the first time the networks went off the air for a good cause. They previously went off the air back in 2018 for 17 minutes in memory of the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida who were killed.
