The country has recorded a total of RM6.1 billion in losses due to the recent floods that hit 11 states and federal territories last month, according to the Department of Statistics of Malaysia (DOSM).

Selangor, the worst-hit state suffered losses up to RM3.1 billion alone, followed by Pahang (RM593.2 million), Malacca (RM85.2 million), Negeri Sembilan (RM77.1 million) and Johor (RM50.1 million), according to DOSM.

In a newly released report, titled "Special Report on the Impact of Floods in Malaysia, 2021", chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the overall losses recorded were equivalent 0.40 percent as against nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"The flood that hit this nation in the late of 2021 and early 2022 had caused damage to living quarters, vehicles, business premises, manufacturing and agriculture sector as well as public assets and infrastructure."

"Living quarters losses were RM1.6 billion, business premises RM0.5 billion, vehicles RM1 billion, agriculture RM90.6 million, manufacturing RM0.9 billion and, public assets and infrastructure RM2 billion," he said.

Sixty districts were affected by the floods. They were situated in Johor, Kelantan, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.

Also included are the RM32.4 million losses to Kuala Lumpur, RM22 million to Kelantan, RM9.3 million to Sabah, RM3.4 million to Perak and RM400,000 to Terengganu. Sarawak only suffered RM10,000 in losses.

Out of 60 districts affected by the massive floods, Klang recorded the highest losses up to RM1.2 billion, followed by Petaling (RM1.1 billion) and Hulu Langat (RM0.4 billion).

The RM3.1 billion losses recorded in Selangor, includes damages worth RM1.0 billion in living quarters, RM855 million in vehicles, RM396.4 million in business premises and RM884.5 million in the manufacturing sector.
