‘Like A Movie’: Watch Sinkhole Turn Soccer Pitch Into Terrifying Field Of Screams

A soccer field in Alton, Illinois, partially disappeared on Wednesday morning when it was gobbled up by a gigantic 100-foot-wide sinkhole.

A surveillance camera captured the dramatic collapse of the pitch at Gordon Moore City Park.

Incredibly, no one was on the field at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The pitch is above a working limestone mine. Mine operator New Frontier Materials said “surface subsidence” had led to the sinkhole.

Investigations into the incident continue, the field remains closed, and operations at the mine “have been halted,” said Alton Mayor David Goins.

“It was surreal. Kind of like a movie where the ground just falls out from underneath you,” Alton Parks and Recreation Department director Michael Haynes told First Alert 4.

“The mines have been here and in this area for decades and decades. It’s never been brought up before, so I’m told it’s an anomaly,” he added. “We’ll wait until the investigation is complete.”
