Nobody likes paying the cable company every month. Besides shelling out for internet access, it’s likely you have to spring for modem rental fees too. What gives? Let’s do the math: If you pay $15 every month to use a blinking black box, that’s upwards of $180 gone from your wallet every year.

It used to be that even if you bought your own modem, internet service providers could still charge a service fee. However, thanks to new legislation passed in December 2020, you can’t be charged a fee anymore if you have your own internet equipment.

So instead of renting a modem, buy one: The Motorola Cable Modem (model MB7420) is on sale for $59, down from $70 at Amazon.

And if you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $25 or more.)

Not only is the Motorola modem likely faster than your existing internet connection, it also supports top providers, including Comcast XFINITY, Charter Spectrum, Time Warner Cable, Cox, BrightHouse and much more. And many shoppers say it’s speedier, too.

"Don't give Comcast any more money than necessary," one savvy shopper shared. "They will give you a list of acceptable modems. No. Just no. Their choices are subpar and expensive. I saved so much with simple research here on Amazon. I instantly saw an increased speed as soon as I hooked it up."

Simply replace and connect this Motorola modem to your internet cable, activate it with your local ISP (internet service provider) and that’s it. Once your cable company verifies the modem with your account, you’re all set. Then send back the modem rental and start saving money every month.

"Great upgrade from the cable company model," added another satisfied Amazon shopper. "This model boots up, negotiates and connects much quicker than the old modem. We immediately saw a 15 percent increase in downstream tests and a slight increase in upstream rate. Don't rent an inferior modem from your ISP. I was paying for bandwidth that I couldn't use with the original modem. This one will pay for itself in six months not to mention works better."
