Lukashenko Motorcade Drives Through Minsk on Day of Controversial Inauguration

The motorcade of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was seen traveling through the streets of Minsk, Belarus, on September 23, the same day he was unexpectedly sworn in for a sixth presidential term.

The official news agency BelTA reported Lukashenko put his right hand on the constitution and took the oath of office, before signing it during the inauguration ceremony.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty said news of the ceremony “was met immediately with criticism at home by members of the opposition,” while “spontaneous demonstrations broke out in Minsk.”

The city has been at the heart of more than six weeks of nationwide protests opposing the results of the August 9 election that officials say Lukashenko won with over 80 percent of the vote. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
