The exterior of your home is definitely a big factor in your buying decision. I mean, you’re going to have to look at it every day! A recent study by the real estate portal Homes.com dove into what home styles people prefer in the United States, and it found that the most popular style isn’t actually the most common.

More than 5,000 adults in the U.S. were surveyed about their favorite house styles, features, and more. Out of the most common house styles–Midcentury Modern Ranch, Modern Farmhouse, Spanish Colonial/Southwest, Bohemian Craftsman, Italianate, French Chateau, and Tudor–the site found that Modern Farmhouse was the most popular home style in 42 states, to be exact. People take a liking to this style, because it’s “‘aesthetically pleasing but not boring,’ it looks ‘simple, cozy, and not too busy,’ and it seems like ‘a nice big home for a family,’” according to the study participants.

The Midcentury Modern Ranch style home came in second, appearing to be most popular in states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Arizona. That style is preferred for its “clean lines and big windows” and its minimalistic, nature-blending look.

While Midcentury Modern Ranch style and Modern Farmhouse were the most popular, the study found that the most common style you’ll see on American streets is Bohemian Craftsman–which has a more layered look. That’s followed by Modern Farmhouse with Midcentury Modern Ranch close behind.

Looks like we may be seeing more Modern Farmhouse style homes in the coming years—builders take note!
