More Than 100 Migrants Rescued Off Lampedusa

At least 124 migrants, including women and children, were rescued by the Italian Coast Guard off Lampedusa on Wednesday, March 8, according to local media.

Footage from the Italian coast guard shows a migrant hanging onto a buoy while being dragged towards a rescue boat. A separate clip shows children being lifted from an overcrowded, low-lying vessel.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported that three separate migrant rescues were carried out on Wednesday by Italian authorities near Lampedusa, removing a total of 124 migrants from dangerous waters.

At least one of the small boats sank, the coast guard said. No injures or missing persons were reported.

The migrants had travelled from Tunisia, ANSA said. Credit: Corpo delle Capitanerie di Porto – Guardia Costiera via Storyful
