Mookie Betts walks off Padres with unreal diving catch

Once again, the Los Angeles Dodgers-San Diego Padres lived up to the fight. And once again, the Dodgers came out on top.

Thanks to an incredible, diving catch by Mookie Betts, the Dodgers put away the Padres 2-0 to take their first series of the season. The Padres threatened to tie the game with men on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but then Betts did this to a line drive from Tommy Pham:

Pretty good for a player who started in center field just once last year. Had Betts not made the catch, the Dodgers were almost certainly looking at a tie game, with a chance at a walk-off loss on the next batter.

Per MLB.com's Sarah Langs, Betts covered 55 feet in just 3.3 seconds, with Statcast rating the play as a 10% catch probability. The umpires reviewed the catch to make sure Betts didn't grab the ball off a short bounce, but soon called the game for the Dodgers.

Betts' catch was preceded by a bona fide pitchers duel between Clayton Kershaw and Yu Darvish. Kershaw pitched six shutout innings with two hits allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts, while Darvish struck out nine in seven innings with one earned run and one hit allowed.

The win improves the Dodgers' record to 13-2, easily the best record in MLB. It also puts them 4.5 games ahead of the Padres in what was expected to be the most competitive division race in baseball.

The Dodgers also won Friday in a game that was somehow even more bonkers, emerging with an 11-6 win after 12 innings. The baseball between these two teams has been fun so far.
