Montecito Road Collapse Narrowly Misses Woman
A section of road affected by mudslides in upper Montecito, California, partly collapsed after heavy rain resulted in evacuation orders for the region on Tuesday, January 10.
Footage captured by local resident Sarah Bacon shows a woman and a man walk along the edge of the collapsed road when another small section of the roadway collapses close to the woman.
Speaking to Storyful, Bacon said she thinks the couple thought the road looked fine to them.
“From their point of view it probably looks fine. They don’t realize that the road is hollowed out underneath and that a crack has already formed along the area that is about to break,” she said.
Santa Barbara County, which encompasses Montecito, was hit with severe rainfall on January 9 and 10, turning streets into rivers, toppling trees, shuttering major roadways, and prompting numerous water rescues.
